From exfoliating and cleansing to in-clinic treatments- this week’s topic is all about busting those skincare myths!
MYTH: YOU MUST CLEANSE TWICE DAILY
The foundation of a rigorous skin care regime has long been to cleanse, tone and moisturise twice daily. But could this be stripping your skin of moisture and reducing the benefits of your active ingredients? The answer is yes!
Studies have shown that your skin is at it’s healthiest in the morning, having produced vital oils overnight that help with barrier function and repair. Cleansing in the morning removes these good oils, stripping your skin of its natural moisture.
Secondly, it is recommended to use your AHA’s and retinol treatments at night to resurface and recalibrate the skin. Cleansing in the morning will remove all these active ingredients when they can continue to repair your skin during the day.
Our tip? Double cleanse at night to remove makeup and impurities that have collected during the day and opt for a only a rinse with tepid water in the morning. While it might be hard to break the habit, we suggest trying it for 2 weeks and see how your skin reacts- you just might be converted!
MYTH: FACIAL SCRUBS ARE THE BEST WAY TO EXFOLIATE
Is there anyone who hasn't had the St Ives Apricot Scrub at some point in their life? Promising smoother skin with less breakouts and blemishes, it’s seems like an easy way to exfoliate. What they don’t tell you is these harsh beads not only remove dead skin cells, but also strip moisture and cause micro-tears in the skin.
Fortunately, there is a method that is kinder and more effective- AHA’s. Derived from natural substances, these magic acids gently but thoroughly loosen dead skin to reveal smooth, new skin.
As an added bonus, they also help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve moisture content. When used daily, they are likely to significantly improve overall skin quality.

MYTH: YOU ONLY NEED FACIALS WHEN YOU HAVE VISIBLE CONCERNS
The majority of clients will begin their skin journey when they have a problem they need to fix: they have an active breakout, they want to reduce the signs of ageing or they want a change in their current routine.
While they are likely to commit to the process until they achieve their desired results, the ongoing maintenance is often quickly abandoned.
Here at MALC, we like to stress the importance of healthy skin rather than skin that just looks good on the surface. And just like anything pertaining to good health, it requires consistency. This includes a balanced diet, lots of water, a simple yet effective skincare routine and regular professional treatments.
Your skin is your biggest organ, the barrier against external factors and the first thing people see when they look at you- give it the love it deserves!
